Discrete Heterogeneity Patterns in Panel Data∗

چکیده
We propose a panel data estimator that leaves the relationship between observables and unobservables unrestricted, while allowing for flexible time-varying patterns of heterogeneity. Our approach restricts the support of unobserved heterogeneity, effectively assuming that individual units belong to a small number of groups. The “grouped fixed-effects” estimator that this paper introduces is shown to be higher-order unbiased as N and T tend to infinity, under conditions that we characterize. As a result, inference is not affected by the fact that group membership is estimated. We apply our approach to study the link between income and democracy, while allowing for permanent and time-varying country-specific heterogeneity. The results differ significantly from approaches that assume that country heterogeneity does not vary over time. JEL codes: C23.

Discretizing Unobserved Heterogeneity∗
We study panel data estimators based on a discretization of unobserved heterogeneity when individual heterogeneity is not necessarily discrete in the population. We focus on two-step grouped-fixed effects estimators, where individuals are classified into groups in a first step using kmeans clustering, and the model is estimated in a second step allowing for group-specific heterogeneity. We anal...
متن کاملA Novel Combinatorial Approach to Discrete Fracture Network Modeling in Heterogeneous Media
Fractured reservoirs contain about 85 and 90 percent of oil and gas resources respectively in Iran. A comprehensive study and investigation of fractures as the main factor affecting fluid flow or perhaps barrier seems necessary for reservoir development studies. High degrees of heterogeneity and sparseness of data have incapacitated conventional deterministic methods in fracture network modelin...
متن کاملNonparametric Discrete Choice Models with Unobserved Heterogeneity
In this research, we provide a new method to estimate discrete choice models with unobserved heterogeneity that can be used with either cross-sectional or panel data. The method imposes nonparametric assumptions on the systematic subutility functions and on the distributions of the unobservable random vectors and the heterogeneity parameter. The estimators are computationally feasible and stron...
متن کاملDisentangling Preferences and Learning in Brand Choice Models
In recent years there has been a growing stream of literature in marketing and economics that models consumers as Bayesian learners. Such learning behavior is often embedded within a discrete choice framework which is then calibrated on scanner panel data. At the same time it is now accepted wisdom that disentangling preference heterogeneity and state dependence is critical in any attempt to un...
متن کاملAn Empirical Analysis of Consumption Patterns for Mobile Apps and Web: A Multiple Discrete-Continuous Extreme Value Approach
Using a unique panel data set detailing individual-level mobile app consumption, this study develops a utility theory-based structural model for multiple discrete/continuous choices in app use. We identify the dynamics and interdependencies between mobile apps and jointly quantify consumers’ app choice and satiation simultaneously. The results suggest that mobile users’ baseline utility is the ...
